There are lots of players out there that are playing with high-quality rackets and they have been doing so for a long time now too.

But not all of them are using the same type of racket, which is what makes tennis even more fun.

Pro players often switch between different types of rackets throughout the year and only use some on special occasions.

Rackets come in all different shapes and sizes and they are all made out of different materials.

Players are constantly changing rackets so it’s hard to keep up with what they are all using.

But if you have a favorite player, then chances are high that he or she is actually using something similar, so definitely check out the racket they are playing with.

What size tennis rackets do professionals use?

It’s more or less safe to say that all of the professional tennis players on the ATP and Women’s tour are using a regular-sized racket, but some do switch it up.

Serena Williams for instance uses both regular and midsize rackets, while Jelena Jankovic is almost always playing with a midsize one.

The only professionals that are using a large racket instead of a regular-sized one are those from the Chinese and Japanese tours.

This is mostly because their rackets have smaller heads, so it’s easier for them to handle.

Andy Roddick, as well as James Blake, use larger rackets but they are also both tall players, so naturally, they would choose larger rackets.

To summarize things, all of the professional tennis players out there are using regular-sized rackets but some of them do switch it up every once in a while.

The fact that Serena Williams uses midsize ones as well is pretty interesting, but it’s always a good idea to do so if you want the best of both worlds.

What is the average weight of a tennis racket that Pro uses?

The average weight of a tennis racket that a pro uses is anywhere between 250 and 300 grams, but there are some outliers.

Ivo Karlovic for instance is an outlier when it comes to his racket’s weight, as he loves using ones that are 330 grams or more!

Some people might say they want something lighter because it’s easier to handle, but the truth of the matter is that a racket is as light as you want it to be.

You just have to increase the string tension and voila! A tennis racket that weighs 280 grams can feel lighter than one weighing 250 grams if your string tension is high enough.

What size frame do pros use?

The frame size is also something you can choose yourself.

If you think about it, some pros play with small-headed rackets and use midsize frames as well! Andy Roddick is one of them, but he has been using a larger racket lately.

Others opt for smaller heads because they feel more comfortable with them.

The important thing to remember here is that no matter the size, all of the tennis rackets out there are very similar in terms of weight and handle size!

What do professional players use for strings?

Professional players rely heavily on string tension when choosing their string setup.

This doesn’t mean they go to the pro shop and ask for something very specific, but they do know which tension is good for them.

For instance, if you hold two rackets that both weigh 300 grams with the same handle size and one has 25 main strings whereas the other has 17, it’s safe to say that the racket with more strings will be slightly stiffer.

It also has elasticity, so string tension is really important when it comes to tennis rackets!

Do any pro tennis players use oversize rackets?

Andy Roddick has been using oversized rackets in the past when he was playing, but now he is back to regular-sized ones.

The only professional tennis player that is currently using an oversize racket is John Isner.

What do you think about the 18×20 string pattern?

The 18×20 stringing pattern is very comfortable.

So much so that according to Roddick himself, it’s something professional tennis players should think about using!

It offers a great amount of control (hence the name), but the downside is that it doesn’t offer tons of spin or power.

Is there any way you can get an 18×20 string pattern on a regular racket?

While not everyone can afford to get an oversize tennis racket, there is a very simple way of getting the 18×20 string pattern without having to do anything too radical.

All you have to do is replace your current strings with some that offer more elasticity and voila! You’re done!

In conclusion

Pro tennis players use all sorts of different tennis rackets, but the most important thing is that they can find one that suits their playing style.

Whether that means using a large or small racket, a midsize frame, or an oversize racket, it’s up to them!

As for string tension and the string pattern, those are also things that players can change to better suit their needs.

So the next time you’re at the pro shop, don’t be afraid to ask for some advice! 😉

About Me

Hi! I’m Matt Olsen, and I’ve been playing tennis for over 10 years. Tennis is my life!

My favorite part about being a professional tennis player? Playing the game. My least favorite part of this job? Sitting on the bench after having to retire from a match because of an injury (it’s still fun watching the teammates play, though!).

One secret that helps me keep up with all my training? Choosing the best tennis racket that suits me. In fact, it’s one of the reasons why I started this site Tennis on Flame, where I help people find their perfect racket!
